Our offers for Gerard's Saint-Joseph always receive a big response.
Xavier Gérard has maintained a low profile, but he's among the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhône. For me, Gérard's Saint-Joseph is one of the most noteworthy examples of the appellation.
His Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard has such a striking purity and clarity that it's easy to understand why so many people flock to the wine.
Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard is a young grower who took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and in no time has turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrahs and Viogniers.
The majority of Gerard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His Saint-Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. In a good vintage, he makes a mere 2,000 bottles of the Saint-Joseph.
Le Blanchard is a fascinating expression of Saint-Joseph. It possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume - elements that it shares with Cote-Rotie. In the more classical 2021 vintage, the aromatics of the wine really pop, and the wine has a startling finesse.
I'll close by encouraging anyone who is interested to get their orders in early. If previous offers are any indication, our allocation won't last for long.
