Historic Vintage - 0.3ha:
2005 Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Posted by Ian McFadden

Lafarge's wines have an understated grace that borders on magical.

No place is this more apparent than the Caillerets bottling.

For a good number of Burgundy experts, Caillerets is one of the best sites in Volnay. Many believe that if Volnay were to have Grand Crus, Caillerets would be at the top of the list.

Caillerets is Volnay at its most painstakingly precise. It does not lack in intensity or length but delivers these with a subtlety and a gorgeous, slow-to-unfold complexity.

Lafarge's Caillerets is a thing of utter beauty. The 2005 vintage clearly propelled the wine into another realm. Back in 2008, Burghound wrote that it was a "wow" wine. Time has only made the wine more profound.

The 2005 Caillerets has incredible punch and length along with delineation, fine-ness, and purity. There's an undeniable completeness to the wine that's simply awesome.

The red Burgundies of 2005 are extraordinary. It's a vintage of nearly unheard-of structure and terroir imprint that seems destined to be included with the greats of the past fifty years.

It's rare that I have a chance to buy Lafarge's Caillerets. With only 0.3ha, it's a wine that seldom sees the light of day. I feel very fortunate to have landed this small parcel. I suggest that you get your orders in early. I expect a quick sell out.

Burghound: (2008) "This is more aromatically complex still with ethereal notes of red and black fruit, floral notes, particularly violets and subtle spice and earth hints trimmed in a discreet bit of wood where all of this aromatic firepower precedes the rich, generous and impressively refined flavors that possess superb depth of extract that buffers the firm tannins on the structured, powerful and hugely long, indeed explosive finish. A 'wow' wine."
