Since we started carrying the wines, we haven't skipped a vintage. They are incredibly consistent. With that said, on the two times that I've tasted the 2023 whites, they've been extraordinary.
Venica & Venica's 2023s are so good that they demanded to be offered to a wider audience than usual. I'm happy to offer one of our favorites from their lineup this vintage, the 2023 Friulano Ronco delle Cime.
Friulano is thought to be a descendant of Sauvignon Blanc, but the grape assumes a personality that makes any kinship almost unrecognizable. Venica & Venica's 2023 Friulano Ronco delle Cime flaunts Friulano's signatures in nearly every dimension with incredible clarity and intensity.
In short, the 2023 is a stunning expression of the grape. The presentation is seamless and compact, but full of complexity. It covers a remarkable amount of ground - everything from almonds and stone fruits to herbs, floral tones, and rocky minerality. All of this is wrapped in a silky texture and backed by an elegant and persistent acidity. It's a thrilling combination.
Venica & Venica was founded in 1930 and today stands as one of the benchmarks of Friuli's Collio region. The combination of warm Adriatic influence and cool breezes from the mountains along with marl and sandstone soils make this part of Friuli one of the best places in Italy for white wine. Venica & Venica farms their sites organically.
This is an especially impressive effort from Venica & Venica. They may very well be the best wines that I've tasted from the estate. The 2023 Friulano is simply a triumph.
