Hitting the Bull's-Eye
2014 Julien Sunier Fleurie

Old Roumier barrels, a steep and rocky site in Fleurie rented from Yvon Métras' brother and an intimate knowledge of Beaujolais.

When you put these together, it's no surprise that Julien Sunier has become one of Beaujolais top young winemakers.

Getting a leg up in the wine world can happen in odd ways. For Julien Sunier, it started with someone whose hair his mother cut. That someone was none other than Christophe Roumier.

Sunier ended up working with Roumier, went on to spend time in the new world and finally landed in Beaujolais where he gained a deep knowledge of the region while working for a negociant before striking out on his own.

In no time, Sunier has become one of the most exciting and talked about young producers in Beaujolais. Many include him among the region's best. To be honest, we've been tracking Sunier since the 2010 vintage and have been impressed, but this 2014 is something entirely different.

Sunier's success in 2014 is no surprise. Across the board, the vintage is one of the strongest that we've seen in the past decade. The wines have great presence, verve and clarity.

What really wowed us with Sunier's Fleurie was its texture. It's beautifully suave with a stern acid and mineral backbone. We love that the wine has such a seductive mouth feel along with a hightoned and incisive character. It's really complex in its layers of herbs, earth, stony minerals and wide spectrum of bright red fruits.

The Fleurie comes from an intensely steep parcel of old vines called Niagara. The vineyard has a very, very thin layer of topsoil over Fleurie's pink granite. In Sunier's hands, this site has Fleurie's famous delicacy with an amazing energetic core.

This wine really blew us away. I'm happy that we can offer it at such an accessible price. We created special 6-pack pricing because you'll end up wanting to have plenty of this on hand.
