Pierre Duroché is one of the most exciting producers of red Burgundy.
He is a 5th generation winemaker who took over the domaine in 2005 and immediately turned out breathtaking examples of Burgundy.
Duroché crafts Gevreys of incredible purity with intricate and subtle complexity
From everything that we've heard, the domaine's 2019s are easily among the best they have produced to date. Duroché was able to harness the ripeness of the vintage into an expression of streamlined power and amazing soil-drenched delineation and freshness.
It's been many years since a red Burgundy vintage has been met with the level of excitement that surrounds 2019. It seems that Duroché was perfectly dialed into the vintage, capturing a rare level of precision and verve.
The Gevrey "Champ" dramatizes these qualities. Champ comes from northern Gevrey from a site averaging 40-45-year-old vines. Champ's signature is refinement, detailed minerality, and snap. As Neal Martin notes, the 2019 has "a fine bead of acidity" and "a lovely silky finish". The quick summary is it is a charming and beguiling wine.
From Villages to Grand Cru, Duroché's entire lineup is seriously impressive. With that said, we're especially fond of the lieu-dits bottlings. They make abundantly clear the precision and attention to detail that's in play at this domaine. The 2019 "Champ" represents how impressive the lieu-dits can be.
