Hitting the Bulls-Eye - Revisited:
2018 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Spätlese #5

Posted by Joe Salamone

There appears to be no stopping Willi Schaefer.

They are a historic benchmark and loved by every Riesling fan that we've met. However, in recent vintages, the quality has really shown just what a world-class estate this is.

Vintage after vintage, they turn out some of the greatest wines.

Schaefer's 2018s are absolutely stunning. They leap out as among the best examples of the vintage. Generally speaking, 2018 was a ripe vintage. It took considerable skill to maintain the Mosel's typical finesse and steely spine. Schaefer nailed the vintage in this regard.

Today, I'm happy to have another opportunity to offer Domprobst 2018 Spätlese #5. The 2018 Spätlese #5 is among the high points of Schaefer's superlative collection.

Along with richly complex notes of spice, stone fruits, and floral notes, you can expect Schaefer's verve and fine-ness along with serene precision. The combination is really, really compelling.

I'll wrap this up. We bought every bottle that we could get our hands on. The Spätlese #5 is a monument of the vintage.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2018er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was harvested at 93° Oechsle in the Nikolausley and Gerdsgrub and was fermented down to fully fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. The wine offers a gorgeous nose dried herbs, hay, greengage, whipped cream, and smoky elements. It is overtly fruity yet playful on the delicately creamy palate and leaves a clean and pure feel of herbs and spices in the long finish."
