Purity in Chambolle
2013 Bertheau Chambolle 1er Cru
"I do wonder how he has managed to fly beneath the international burgundy-loving radar for so long. His wines are really outstanding - very pure and unforced." -Jancis Robinson
If you were to scan a series of tasting notes on Bertheau, you'd find tons of "very Chambolle" and "pure and elegant."
Bertheau has become an obsession of ours and it's this purity and honesty that keeps us coming back. They are classic Burgundies in their elegance and subtlety. The 2013s dramatize this.
Bertheau's wines are great values, but the 1er Cru is especially so. That hasn't gone unnoticed. I'm sure our modest parcel will sell out quickly.
Bertheau is a small domaine with only 6.2ha. The 1er Cru is a blend of four different 1er Crus that total 1ha. It's not practical to bottle these separately, so he blends the sites. Among the four 1er Crus are the impressive Baudes (which is in the shadows of Bonnes Mares) and the very mineral and elegant Gruenchers.
The 2013 Chambolle 1er Cru really highlights how successful Bertheau was for the vintage. It's so pristine, elegant and texturally beautiful. The 1er Cru has a captivating lift delivering bright red fruits, floral notes, spice and a deep mineral streak.
Nearly every time that I taste a Bertheau wine, they make me happy. As I said earlier, they're honest wines in the most exemplary way. There aren't many Burgundies like Bertheau available these days and 2013 marks a big success for the domaine. The 1er Cru is the value of the stable.
