I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been blown away by a bottle of Drouhin’s Clos des Mouches.
It's an enigmatic wine. It's a 1er Cru from Beaune, an area known for a certain rusticity. Yet Mouches dazzles with its elegance and overall breeding.
Many times, I've witnessed Mouches go toe-to-toe with Grand Crus.
It probably doesn't come as a surprise that Mouches is a wine that I have a profound affection for.
We first offered Drouhin's 2016 Mouches Rouge in mid-August when everyone was on vacation. It's a really great example of the wine and I don't think the timing of the offer gave the wine its due. I'm very happy to be able to offer Drouhin's 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge again at very sharp pricing.
The 2016 Mouches dramatically highlights how the wine takes the force and heft of Beaune and adds an incredibly finessed mineral tension.
The 2016 Mouches possesses a lovely cool profile and concentrated, soil-inflected boldness. In this vintage, which doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to gripping palate presence, the wine manages to be lifted and explosively clear and bright. It’s really hard not to be impressed by the 2016’s sappy and transparent drive.
Clos des Mouches was one of the first sites that Joseph Drouhin bought in the 1920s and remains one of the gems of the domaine’s heavy hitting stable. For Burgundy lovers, it’s one of the great bastions of value.
The wine has a reputation for making serious old bones. Burghound has notes from recently tasting a great 1964. The combination of tension and sheer concentration gives me confidence that the 2016 will age beautifully.
