Ballot Millot has been amassing vineyards in Burgundy since the 17th Century. 2014 represents a breakout vintage for the domaine.
For over a decade this domaine has been one to watch and then, in 2014, everything clicked.
As you can imagine, their Perrières leads the charge. When I tasted this wine a couple of months ago, I was taken aback. Perrières is holy ground for Chardonnay and I can't think of another wine from the site that offers so much for the money.
It's impossible not to ascribe some of the wine's staggering success to the 2014 vintage. Simply put, 2014 is one of the most exciting young white Burgundy vintages that we've tasted. There's classicism, verve and mineral clarity along with a crazy amount of concentration and presence.
Ballot Millot has been on a swift ascent since 2000 when Charles Ballot took over from his father Philippe. A few years ago Burghound summed up the wines as "transparent, elegant and pure." We agree. Stylistically, Ballot Millot seems to occupy a middle territory between the very reductive style of Meursault that you find in producers like Coche, Roulot and Boisson and the richer, oily style of old school Meursaults. The wines are clear, energetic and detailed, without being totally shy on richness and grandeur.
Meursault doesn't have any Grand Crus, but there's no doubt that Perrières can rival many of them. For Chardonnay, this is a very special place. The wines are deeply complex with a staggering, refined elegance.
The Ballot Millot's 2014 boldly struts Perrières' nobility. It possesses incredible refinement, complexity and mineral precision. Stephen Tanzer's note captures the wine very well. He talks about how "impeccably balanced" it is, along with its "weightless impression" and the "lovely combination of salinity and ripeness." That pretty much nails it.
It's clear that 2014 is a special vintage for white Burgundy. Ballot Millot's Perrières offers so much for the price tag that I strongly suggest you check it out. Deals like this from Perrières are rare, and vintages like 2014 don't come around very often either.

2014 Ballot Millot Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres
Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media: "Pale, bright yellow. Saline crushed rock on the nose, along .with hints of pineapple, orange blossom and spices. Supple, silky and light on its feet, with pineapple and fresh peach flavors enlivened by minerality and vibrant acidity. Delivers lovely inner-mouth perfume and a weightless impression. This impeccably balanced, edge-free wine shows deceptive early accessibility but has the intensity and mineral support to age gracefully. Boasts a lovely combination of salinity and ripeness and finishes with terrific length"
