It's impossible for me not to kick off 2014 with a 2011 Mugneret-Gibourg.
You can think of this email as an addendum to my 2013 wine of the year, the '11 Chaignots from Mugneret-Gibourg.
Mugneret-Gibourg is one of the great successes of 2011, and that's why I keep returning to them. Their 2011s were easily among the most memorable wines of my Burgundy trip this year. They really "got" the vintage.

What makes Mugneret-Gibourg's 2011 Vosne-Romanée so compelling is how it combines a seductive texture with an ultra-fine and elegant precision. To return to the Burghound quote above, it's "utterly delicious... and impeccably well-balanced." Put another way, this is simply a gorgeous wine. Nobody can combine these elements the way that Mugneret-Gibourg does.
I've had a soft spot for Mugneret-Gibourg's Vosne-Romanée for some time. For me there's no better example of a village-level Vosne than Mugneret-Gibourg's. For every vintage of this wine I stash at least a handful of bottles to age. With 5 to 8 years of age, it becomes a heart-breaking tapestry of suave, velvety dark fruits, earth and exotic spices.
I can't tell you how many times I've been in the cellars of serious Burgundy collectors, and there among the greatest Grand and 1er Crus is a big pile of Mugneret-Gibourg's Vosne-Romanée.
This all goes to explain why every vintage I search high and low to amass enough of this wine to offer. It's never easy. To be honest, I invest the same amount of time finding this "little" Vosne as I do securing top producers' Grand Crus. It's always worth it, though. This is one of the wines that I love and want to share.
