2006 Pousse d'Or
Pommard Jarolieres - Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or
Santenay Les Gravières - Santenay Clos des Tavannes

The Burghound makes no bones about it: "This is a domaine to watch."

With fantastic sites and a long, impressive history, Pousse d’Or is one of the most well-known names in Burgundy. Now under the progress-minded Patrick Landanger, the domaine is primed, as Meadows notes, for “rejoining the elite domaines in Volnay.”

Let’s not make any bones about the pricing, either: This is one of the most compelling deals in traditional Burgundy.

Today we offer a premier cru Pommard and Volnay two-pack for $94.95; our premier cru Santenay rouge and blanc three-pack is at $86.95. Compare-at pricing puts these at 30% and 40% off the lowest prices in the nation, respectively.

This is an absolute steal for wines from a producer who maintains some of the very best holdings in Volnay. The 1970s and 80s brought rampant success to Pousse d'Or under the hand of Gerard Potel, whose careful vineyard and cellar work established the domaine's signature rich style. In 1997, Landanger (a former electromechanical engineer with an educated passion for fine wine) sunk a small fortune into the estate and fast-forwarded the winemaking facilities into the 21st century. For the last eight years, renewed praise for the Domaine de la Pousse d'Or has snowballed, with high scores from the Burghound at the core. (See below for his complete tasting notes on today's wines.)

Today’s packs come as fantastic values from the fresh 2006 vintage. This is the vintage so often overshadowed by the monster 2005s – it's also the vintage Pousse d’Or nailed. Here’s Meadows again: “While it's true that these '06s are not quite up to the quality of the stellar Pousse d'Or '05s, they're not far off. Landanger continues to improve every vintage in terms of the purity of his fruit and in particular, the sophistication of the supporting tannins.”

This expertise is especially evident in the Clos de la Bousse d’Or, a Volnay that comes with a bit more power than we typically expect from the village, yet it’s awash in velvety berry fruit and rich earth that’s finely woven together with a silken thread of tannin.

Playing the other side of the feminine/masculine Volnay/Pommard card is the Jarolieres, one of the best premier crus in Pommard, which gives up cool reddish blue fruit yet maintains a surprising agility for all of Pommard’s underlying muscle. The great concentration that can be achieved in old vines (these are 50 to 80 years old and) is crystal clear here.

On the Santenay side, the Clos des Tavannes is an outstanding deal for a spicier, fruit-packed and rich red Burgundy from what has been called Santenay’s “grand cru.” It’s nearly impossible to find solid premier cru Burgundy at this price. We recommend one for drinking now and one for stashing away - great Tavannes like this has a solid decade of aging potential.

Segueing into the counterpart of Santenay is the Les Gravières, a premier cru parcel with a certain propensity for crisp and fruity Chardonnays. Pousse d’Or’s tends towards opulence and slight exoticism yet stays primely focused with enough balancing acid to make for a fresh finish.

This is a very limited parcel at very sharp pricing; when we run out, that's it. Please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463 to place your order.

2006 Pousse d'Or

Pommard / Volnay 2-Pack: $94.95
Compare at $137-200

1 x 2006 Pousse d'Or Pommard Jarolieres
Burghound: In contrast to the expressiveness of the prior wines, here the nose is reserved, indeed brooding with pretty but cool red berry fruit notes that marry into supple, round and admirably pure medium-bodied flavors that are moderately concentrated, all wrapped in a long balanced and harmonious finish that again displays very fine tannins. This has enough Pommard muscle to age very well.

1 x 2006 Pousse d'Or Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or
Burghound: This is less aromatically elegant than the Caillerets but more complex with a layered nose of red and blue pinot fruit, earth and mineral hints that are also reflected back by the nicely rich and full yet detailed flavors that are supple and beautifully textured on the admirably long finish. This is a wine of finesse as the tannins are extremely fine. Lovely juice.

Santenay Tavannes / Gravieres 3-Pack: $86.95
Compare-at $127-160

2x 2006 Pousse d'Or Santenay Clos des Tavannes
Burghound: An earthy yet still relatively elegant nose features dark berry fruit and hints of wood spice that complement well the rich, delicious and notably pure flavors that are textured, precise and display a hint of finishing minerality. This is really quite stylish and well worth a look for its level.

1x 2006 Pousse d'Or Santenay Les Gravières
Burghound: A very subtle note of exoticism adds nuance to the melon, straw and orchard fruit aromas that are in keeping with the opulent, full and delicious flavors that are easy to like but not simple and there is enough acid support to keep proper focus and balance.
