In A Class of Its Own: 2012 Chevillon Bourgogne Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

For us, it doesn't get much better than Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge.

Along with Mugneret-Gibourg, Chevillon's Bourgogne gets hunted down with the same intensity as top Grand Crus and often seems as hard to find.

A couple of weeks ago, we did a "back up the truck" offering on Chevillon's 2014 Bourgogne Rouge. Today, we're doing a much quieter offer on a small parcel of 2012 Bourgogne Rouge.

Chevillon's Bourgogne has a serious following and it's sourced from only 0.8ha. Finding the wine in any quantity can seem impossible. I'm really happy to have landed this older vintage.

Chevillon's 2012s are stunning. Speaking to Burghound, Bertrand Chevillon said "You really couldn't ask for cleaner fruit."

This is a Bourgogne Rouge that punches way above it's weight class delivering really impressive density and purity. The 2012 has deep red fruits, earth, and minerals. I really like Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge when it starts to develop secondary characteristics and the 2012 is beginning to show the complexity that comes with maturity.

Every vintage I devote a lot of time trying to track down Chevillon's Bourgogne. From a pure dollar perspective it makes no sense, but it's a wine that I've been obsessed with since my early years of drinking. It's a wine that's brimming with soul and overdelivers.
