"In a word, sensational"
2002 Raveneau Chablis
Grand Cru Valmur
"As I originally observed, with the exception of the 2008 version, this is as good a young Raveneau Valmur as I have ever had" -Burghound
While Clos may more often make the headlines, in great vintages, Raveneau's Valmur is legendary.
Where Clos is monumental in scale, Valmur is taut, energy-packed, full of finesse and ruthlessly mineral.
On the 02, Burghound notes the purity of the minerality saying that it "seem[s] to be extracted directly from liquid rock." Please do check out the entire Burghound note below. It does a wonderful job capturing this great wine.
Simply put, this is a gorgeous Grand Cru Chablis that's just starting to reach maturity with many, many years ahead of it.
As the Burghound note makes clear, Raveneau's 02 Valmur is a special wine. Raveneau's Valmur is easily on the short list of the great white wines of the world. As is usually the case, there's just not much of this around. With that said, we'll keep this short.
Raveneau maintains just over a half-hectare of the Valmur Grand Cru, and the wines barely show up in quantity even upon first release. When you search around for Raveneau's top Grand Crus with some age on it, say from 2005 and back, you only find a few listings and where you do find them, there are only a few bottles available.
Needless to say, this is a modest parcel that we're only offering out to people who've supported the Burgundy program here.
Personally, Raveneau's Valmur is one of my favorite wines in all of Chablis. There's an elegance to the wine, a firm mineral spine that I find really compelling. Also, compared to the Clos it offers good relative value. 2002 Clos is currently going for nearly 50% more than Valmur.
Raveneau's 2002 Valmur is an absolutely glorious example of this wine. 02, along with 96 and 08, forms a holy trinity of great vintages for Raveneau. Raveneau really just killed it in 2002. The vintage takes the Valmur's elegance and minerality and adds a layer of concentration and complexity that's thrilling.
As mentioned earlier, this is a very small parcel. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
