"In a word, terrific."
2011 Angerville Mags:
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs
& Volnay 1er Cru Champans
The more I taste them, the more I'm convinced that d'Angerville's 2011s are some of the greatest success stories of the vintage.
These are two wines that really, really impressed me when I first tasted them well over a year ago and I've only grown more fond of them since.
The Côte de Beaune was the strongest area in 2011, but Volnay is a true standout. By the time you get to this level of the d'Angerville range you are dealing with unequivocally gorgeous wines. Their harmony, clarity and overall fine-ness take you to the beating heart of the vintage's sweet spot.
I should confess that I have a weakness for Champans. I've had too many stunning old examples to not be a major believer in it. Champans is a powerful distance runner, for sure. But for all its power, Champans always remains beautifully detailed and finessed. If you want to encounter just how wildly successful d'Angerville was in 2011, Champans is a perfect place to look. Burghound sums it up well - "In a word, terrific."
Finally, there's Clos des Ducs, a monopole site for d'Angerville and one of Volnay's best. This steep, chalky site produces wines of singular intensity and breeding. The finesse, the complexity and the longevity of Ducs is stunning. It's as simple as that. The 2011 Ducs is amazingly agile and the perfume shows the complexity and minerality of this great site with beguiling airiness. Burghound comes out and calls it a "Wow" wine.
I'm going to wrap this up. There's very little wine. And word on d'Angerville's 2011s is out.

Burghound: "An incredibly perfumed, airy and cool nose speaks of anise, essence of red berry fruit, stone and floral hints. There is a distinctly textured mouth feel to the restrained and beautifully well-detailed and intense mineral-driven flavors that are an exercise in harmony and purity. This could rival many a Clos des Ducs from more exalted vintages and this will absolutely require long-term cellaring if you are to experience all that this exquisite wine has to offer. One of the 'wow' wines from the 2011 vintage."
