Lignier is one of the most consistent Burgundy producers that we know. What we love about Lignier's wines is their rugged, soulful honesty.
Today, we're happy to offer two of Lignier's iconic wines, Morey 1er Cru Chaffots and Morey 1er Cru VV.
It's probably not surprising that both of these are sourced from 1er Crus that are adjacent to either Clos de la Roche or Clos St. Denis.
This is a great vintage to check out Lignier. The wines have an almost luminous terroir imprint and plenty of finesse.
The Chaffots 1er Cru sits above Clos St. Denis. It's a very rocky site. There are only a couple of examples of Chaffots available. Lignier's makes clear this is an extreme site, boasting intense concentration with driving acidity, jagged tannins, and a dark stony minerality. Age brings an incredible amount of depth and mystery to the wine.
The 2017 Chaffots is a gorgeously complex mix of earth, minerality, and spice, all backed by intensity and punch. Amid all of the earthy notes are beautiful high-toned, floral tones that add complexity and an impression of levity to the wine.
The Morey 1er Cru VV is one of Lignier's cult bottlings. It's sourced from old vines that sit beneath the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru in the 1er Crus Les Faconnieres and Les Chenevery. Lignier's long-time importer, Neal Rosenthal, writes the Morey 1er Cru VV: "possesses that ineffable Grand Cru stature." This is the place to witness the rugged nobility of Lignier's wine. The 2017 leaves an incredible impression of multidimensional completeness.
These are Burgundies of unyielding honesty and unmediated majesty. There are few producers that I have a soft spot for like Liginer. The style has remained steadfast over decades, and the results are truly impressive.

Burghound "A cool, pure and relatively high-toned nose combines aromas of essence of red cherry, lilac, violet, lavender and plenty of earth character. There is better concentration to the nicely powerful and muscular flavors that culminate in a robust finale and while the finish still comes across as grippy, the tannins seem riper."

Burghound: "Moderately generous wood frames the intensely floral and fresh aromas of dark berries, violet, plum and earth. The rich and strikingly vibrant middle weight flavors exhibit evident muscle and minerality along with very good power on the lingering and very firm finish that is shaped by grippy and somewhat coarse tannins. My sense is that this may become less overtly rustic as the tannins resolve though with that said this is unlikely to ever be particularly refined."
