In The Zone - 43 Years Young:
1977 Graham's Vintage Port

Posted by Ian McFadden

Along with 1970, 1977 was the best vintage of the decade and among the top vintages of the past four.

Today, I'm very excited to offer Graham's 1977, one of the stars of the vintage. It's rare that I get to offer wines at 43 years of age and even rarer that I can offer them at $144.95.

Graham's, which turned 200 years old last year, has long enjoyed being one of Port's top houses. The 1977 shows Graham's in top form.

The 1977 Port vintage is famous for its unremarkable start and totally remarkable end. After a cool and at times wet spring and summer, September and October saw some of the warmest temperatures of the past two decades. The wines are beautiful combining power with a firm backbone and plenty of elegant length.

Graham's signature is a deep, dark, and rounded profile. It dovetailed beautifully with the 1977 vintage. It offers up incredible aromatics with nice richness and serious underlying structure.

As Port ages, it becomes a story of the wines hitting an amazing equilibrium, showing finesse and precision. Graham's 1977 is hitting this moment in its aging curve. While it could age for many more years, it's clearly in the zone. Along with its finely tuned balance, the wine also shows the subtle depth that comes with age.

It's rare that I'm able to find parcels of old Port with enough quantity for an offering. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this. The bottles are in stock for drinking this winter, though I encourage you to pick up extras for the years to come.
