In Top Form, Part II:
2019 Gouges Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

Posted by Ian McFadden

Gouges' 2019s are jaw-droppingly good.

Earlier this week, we offered their Nuits AC. Today, we're very happy to offer the Nuits 1er Cru Vaucrains.

Vaucrains is one of Nuits St. Georges' greatest sites. In Gouges' hands, amazing things happen to this mineral and sauvage site. There are seemingly countless examples of Gouges' Vaucrains that have aged brilliantly.

The 2019 Vaucrains is a complete package. It offers up a formidable structure with beautiful purity and clarity. Everything seems to be in place for a brilliant example of this great site.

While the 2019 is endowed with the masculine, wild character that we’ve come to expect from Vaucrains, what's most striking is the wine's overall harmony. There's a gorgeous texture along with dark fruits and earth-saturated minerality, giving way to an explosive, lengthy finish.

The 2019 Vaucrains shows this historic domaine in top form. Gouges has been on quite a tear in recent vintages. This is a great example of the very high level that they are working on. It is a not to be missed 2019.

Burghound: "Discreet wood influence surrounds the notably ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, earth and evident sauvage wisps. There is excellent richness and volume to the suave, round and seductive mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that contrast markedly with the very firmly structured, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. As is usually the case, this is very compact and backward and a wine that will require extended aging to reach its peak."
