Line up the top wines of the world, toss an Egon Müller into the mix and watch people's eyes light up when the Müller comes around the table.
The wines are simply that good. No wines on earth offer the thrilling contrast between intensity and dancing, intricate delicacy. The wines can haunt you for days.
His upper prädikat wines (Auslese and above) boast a grandness of scale and ultra-refined complexity that places them squarely among the world's great wines. We have no hesitation including these with the best white Burgundies.
Over the past few years, we've watched interest in Müller explode. There's no denying the wines. Once people start tasting them, it's over. Finding the wines, especially the Auslesen, has become very hard.
Scharzhofberg is a unique site. There's no disputing its greatness, but it's a departure from many other top sites. Most of Germany's top vineyards are primarily about ripeness. Scharzhofberg produces wines with relatively low oechsle (ripeness) levels. What Müller does with Scharzhofberg is magical. He renders the site with a beautifully clear steely finesse and indisputable nobility.
The 2017s are, across the board, blazingly pure and elegant. The amount of mineral cut that Muller's 2017s have is jaw-dropping. This razor-sharp focus helped make an absolutely stunning 2017 Auslese. The 2017 has a subtle, layered complexity and beautiful lift.
No producer in Germany has the track record that Müller does. The number of mind-blowing bottles that he has supplied us with is simply crazy. The 2017 Auslese has all the markings of an absolutely brilliant bottle in the making.

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2017er Scharzhofberger Auslese was harvested at a full 120° Oechsle. The wine develops a beautiful pure nose of coconut, under-ripe pineapple, apricot, elderflower, bergamot, passion fruit and delicately honeyed elements. It proves gorgeously smooth and elegant on the hugely focused and delicately playful palate, where layers upon layers of vibrant exotic and orchard fruits mingle with zesty acidity and mineral elements. The finish is smooth, delicately creamy, yet also superbly vibrant and long. This Auslese will please lovers of very pure and refined expressions of noble-sweet Riesling."
