Irresistible Northern Rhône, Gamay Edition
2016 Souhaut Souteronne

Posted by Ian McFadden

When it comes to turning out expressive and dangerously drinkable wines in the Northern Rhône, Souhaut is hard to beat.

In the past, we've called the wines "habit-forming" and that remains the best two word summary that we know.

Souteronne is Gamay that comes from 60 to 80 year old vines on schist soil in the Rhône. When you consider Souhaut’s use of semi-carbonic maceration and the Souteronne’s irresistible drinkability, the inescapable comparison is with Beaujolais. But there’s also a firm iron core, an energetic minerality and a savoriness that’s unmistakably reminiscent of Northern Rhône Syrah.

The 2016 Souteronne is especially snappy, energetic and incredibly expressive. There's a really nice presentation of dark minerality that mingles beautifully with high-toned floral notes and spice. The vintage also kicks up the refreshment factor making it even easier to drink than usual.

Souteronne is one of the most fascinating examples of Gamay around. There's no doubt that people have taken notice of this. The wine is simply so enjoyable that it always disappears quickly when we offer it.
