In vintages like 2023, where that estate simply hits the bullseye, the wines are jaw-droppingly good. As The Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing writes, when Levet is on, "it ranks among the most compelling addresses in Côte-Rôtie."
Today, I'm happy to offer Levet's 2023 Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries and La Chavaroche. We strongly encourage you to check these out. This is the most complete and compelling vintage that we've seen from Levet and in a number of vintages.
Les Journaries comes from 45-year-old vines, primarily from the famed “La Landonne” vineyard. Compared to Chavaroche, Journaries is more elegant and graceful. It combines an untamed intensity with vividness and agility.
Chavaroche is a brutally rocky and steeply terraced southwest-facing vineyard. Levet's vines in Chavaroche were planted in 1940 and make up approximately sixty percent of the wine. The remainder comes from Mollard, another highly regarded site.
For both sites, the 2023s have a beautiful clarity and harmony to them. They are bright and aromatically complex with ultra-clear mineral imprints and serious detail.
We've been working with Levet's wines for nearly twenty vintages. It's really nice to see this favorite estate nail a vintage. Don't miss these.
