Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Bisseuil 1er Cru (2018 Base)

Last year, I had a bottle of Les Vignes de Bisseuil at a restaurant and have been chasing after the wine ever since.

Egly-Ouriet's wines are born out of an extreme point of view - textural, deeply concentrated yet intensely mineral.

Vignes de Bisseuil is a Chardonnay-dominant champagne from old vines. For me, this is a sweet spot for Egly-Ouriet's style. There's a beautiful marriage of power and verve.

Francois Egly, along with Champagne elites like Cedric Bouchard and Anselme Selosse, is adamant about producing wine first, and Champagne second. Peter Liem quotes Francois Egly: “Making bubbles is a technical process. It’s easy. The most difficult thing is to make good wine.”

The 2018 base of Les Vignes de Bisseuil has intensity, transparency, and energy. There's a vinous rigor that nicely frames the radiant chalky core. There are notes of stone fruits, flowers, and brioche.

Egly-Ouriet is one of the long-standing benchmarks of grower champagne. His mastery is on bold display in the Les Vignes de Bisseuil. I'm very happy to offer this dazzling champagne.

William Kelley, The Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2018 vintage, the latest release of Egly's NV Brut Vignes de Bisseuil was disgorged this year with two grams per liter dosage. Offering up aromas of sweet orchard fruit and crisp white peach mingled with notions of white flowers, praline and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming, with a fleshy core of fruit and a racy, chalky spine. It's a bright, precise rendition of this Chardonnay-dominant cuvée."
