Every time I drink one of Selosse's Champages, I'm enthralled by them.
There's simply nothing out there that matches the originality and sheer depth of Selosse's wines.
I drink Selosse at every opportunity. And each time I'm wowed by it. If anything, my love of the wines has grown over the years. They are so deeply nuanced and so singular that I find something new each time.
I have to confess a particular fondness for V.O. It occupies a very appealing middle ground between the snappier Initial and the oxidative and powerful Substance. Version Originale with age on it is just awesome.
V.O. is a blend from the Grand Crus of Avize, Cramant and Oger. Compared to Selosse's Initial, V.O. sees a larger portion of the Avize fruit (Avize is undoubtedly Selosse's spiritual home) and it's sourced from choicer, steeper slopes whereas Initial is sourced from a lower part on the slope. V.O. also sees more time on the lees and a smaller dosage (and at times, no dosage at all.) The extra brut format provides the perfect stage for Selosse's exemplary grape growing and winemaking.
This is Chardonnay of incredible stature, length and purity. There seems to be an unending procession of nuances from chalk, smoke and saline notes to impressions of golden pears, toffee and apple. V.O. is just a crazy complex wine.
V.O. is one of the great, stirring wines of the world. At this point, very few wines can capture me, make me stop everything and take notice. And this one does it every time.
