With all that said, Keller's 2013 Hipping Kabinett Auction is dazzling in an utterly special way. The wine possesses an extraordinary finesse, clarity, and overall breeding.
For those who know, the 2013 Hipping Auction is a legendary bottle, even when judged by world-class standards.
While many of Keller's famous bottles (Hubacker, Abtserde, Morstein, etc.) come from limestone soils, the Hipping comes from steep slopes and the red soils of Niersteiner Hipping. The site is known for producing powerful wines of incredible breeding. In Keller's hands, Hipping Kabinett is both suave and featherweight, intricately blending earthbound minerality and soaring florality. It is punchy in its intensity, yet precise and detailed.
I should warn you that quantities are extremely limited. As much as Keller's Grosses Gewächs is sought after, the top Kabinetts at Keller are even more difficult to find, especially in magnums. They are extraordinary expressions of the category.
