La Bota: Stunning New Releases
Palo Cortado "Bota No" #41
& Manzanilla #42

La Bota is famous for knowing sherry country backwards and forwards, and for bottling very limited quantities of game-changing sherries.

Today, we're happy to offer La Bota's recent releases, including one of the greatest Palo Cortados I've tasted.

It's a holiday weekend and this is only going out to a small group of Sherry fanatics, so I'll try to keep this quick.

We're also in the dead heat of summer and my thoughts usually don't turn to very old Palo Cortado, but La Bota's #41 is just so stunning that it's hard not to keep returning to it. It's easily one of the most remarkable Palo Cortados that I've tasted - right there with Valdespino's Cardenal, Barbadillo's Reliquia and Emilio Hidalgo's Privilegio.

In short, Palo Cortado #41 offers a monumental complexity that puts it on the level of the world's great wines. This is a don't miss. It will be years before it gets bottled again and the quantities for this inaugural release are just tiny.

It's sourced from the legendary GF30 solera of the defunct sherry house of Gaspar Florido, which now rests at Pedro Romero. It was at Pedro Romero that the La Bota team tasted through the solera, selecting their three favorite barrels, those that delivered the best combination of balance, intensity and elegance. In their own words, they write: "it is a truly extraordinary wine for its unlikely balance between sheer authenticity, concentration, and finesse; genuinely amazing, with so much character and personality."

The Manzanilla #42 will be very familiar to La Bota fans. The Manzanilla is sourced from Sánchez Ayala (the same place as Manzanillas #4, 8, 16, 22 and 32) and comes from the Las Canas vineyard in the Pago Balbaína. The Manzanilla from Sánchez Ayala is one of their most loved bottlings. This is a Manzanilla of depth and resonance, but also saline delicacy and cut. Compared to other releases, Manzanilla #42 feels brighter, driven by more citrus and with a very energetic mineral core.

These are just lovely wines. La Bota is one of the most exciting projects happening in wine and these new releases clearly highlight this fact.
