Every year, the greatest winemakers of the Côte d'Or and beyond come to the U.S. to take part in one of the most joyous, thrilling and comprehensive celebrations of Burgundy on the planet: La Paulée. This year, La Paulée is being held in New York City February 10-12.
The lineup for La Paulée should give you an indication as to how serious this event is: Coche-Dury, Colin-Morey, Drouhin, Faiveley, Fourrier, Grivot, Jadot, Lafarge, Comtes Lafon, Leflaive, Liger-Belair, Mugneret-Gibourg, DRC, Roulot, Roumier, Rousseau, Sauzet and many others.

We know very well there are some serious "Burghounds" out there, but we'll note that La Paulée is as enriching and exciting for the novice as it is for the traveled scholar of Burgundy (and everyone in between).
The Verticals Tasting
On Friday afternoon at the new Colicchio & Sons restaurant, 33 participating domaines' will pour three vintages of their flagship wine - this is an unparalleled opportunity to experience side-by-side comparisons of some of the most extraordinary wines from the Côte d'Or.
Cases in point: Drouhin will be pouring their 99, 04 and 07 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche; Liger-Belair will pour 06, 07 and 08 Les Brulées; Mugneret-Gibourg is featuring their 95, 99 and 01 Clos Vougeots.
While this is not an inexpensive event, the breadth and depth of the La Paulée experience is simply incomparable.
The Grand Tasting
This is the more "formal" tasting on Saturday, with all the growers pouring a selection of their wines largely focusing on the fantastic 2008 vintage. Expect a full lineup from basic Bourgogne, through Village, 1er Cru and up to Grand Cru. Many growers and winemakers will be on hand, pouring their wines and answering questions.
For those who really want to compare and contrast, to analyze the style of one grower or site next to the other, to absorb the signature of the vintage, there is really just nothing else quite like this tasting - aside from maybe traveling to Burgundy and spending a week driving around and visiting the growers.
Quite frankly, Burgundy becomes a bit more intelligible, more fascinating, more rewarding at La Paulée while it reiterates its soaring beauty and majesty. I can't recommend this event enough.
The Gala Dinner
That same night, after a small respite from the tasting, the growers and Burgundy lovers from around the world will reach into their personal cellars and come to the Gala Dinner, fully stocked with some of the greatest Burgundies ever made. This is the premier and most widely anticipated "BYOB" dinner in the world!
This is where the legends come out to play, where you can rub shoulders with some of the most extraordinary bottles from the last century. Those of you who have been won over by the siren call of Burgundy: This is the quintessential event.
While the Burgundy on the table will be formidable, expect nothing less from the food. Host Chef Daniel Boulud along with Chefs Tom Colicchio, Daniel Humm and Michel Troisgros will be be presiding over the menu. Rest assured this will be the very best in wine and in food.
