The Saturday Large-Format Blow-Out Continues

Just one more week. We couldn't help it.

After the clamor for the large-format Mugneret-Gibourg and Drouhin bottles we offered the last two weekends, we figured we'd send one more quick MAGNUM offer to try and get these gems into as many hands as possible.

There are just a few mags of each available, so call us or write back quickly if you have any interest! The last two weekends, we've been fielding calls into Wednesday for last Saturday's offers. TAKE NOTE: We'll make allocations first thing Monday morning, and then that's that.

Today we're offering all magnums - 2007 Drouhins (a refresher on how much we love these is here, from our email last weekend) including the 07 Griotte, Grands-Echézeaux and Chambolle 1er Amoureuses plus, just for kicks, 98 Chambolle 1er and 02 Charmes. (Full Burghound notes for each wine but the 98 Chambolle 1er, not reviewed, are below.)

Every one of these shows off the classic Drouhin tapestry of pure, jewel-like fruit with elegance and vibrancy and will offer gorgeous drinking now, if you must, or will cellar beautifully into the next decade - and, in many cases, beyond.

Drouhin's Griotte and Grands-Ech bottlings are benchmarks for their sites and today represent some of the most serious values available from such a top-notch producer. As for the Amoureuses, it's classic, walking with considerable style and structure for a 1er.

The last trinkets we unearthed were the 98 Chambolle 1er Cru and 02 Charmes. Drouhin's Charmes always impresses with remarkable depth and punch for the site, and that's particularly true in the 02.

And while the Burghound didn't review the Chambolle 1er, we can say that this bottling is unswervingly one of our favorite under-the-radar picks from Drouhin - especially the back vintages. We drank an 85 and an 88 recently that were stunning in their silken purity and liveliness. Out of magnum, the 98 should still have plenty of steam in its tank and is an outstanding value.

Again, quantities are limited! We're making allocations Monday morning, so please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463 to place your order.

Mixed Drouhin Magnums

2007 Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin 1.5L

Burghound: "Here too there is a very gentle touch of wood that allows the elegant, pure and airy red berry fruit aromas nuanced by notes of spice, underbrush and earth to have the spotlight while the medium-bodied flavors are supple, forward and relatively refined though as one would reasonably expect, the finish firms up quickly and while the tannins are well buffered by ample mid-palate sap, this will come around sooner than most vintages of this wine."

2007 Drouhin Grands-Echézeaux 1.5L

Burghound: "A gentle touch of wood frames ripe but cool red berry aromas that are exceptionally floral and spicy yet despite the ripeness, the intense minerality this appellation is sometimes capable of displaying is quite noticeable in 2007 and it continues onto the rich, refined, pure and beautifully detailed flavors underpinned by a velvety mouth feel, firm tannins and an explosive finish. While I have always admired this classy wine for its understatement and purity, I have never quite understood why Drouhin is not better known for its Grands Ech. Be that as it may, this is a terrific effort that should age beautifully."

2007 Drouhin Chambolle 1er Amoureuses 1.5L

Burghound: "A discreet touch of wood sets off the intensely floral aromas that share center stage with spicy red berry notes that continue onto the round, rich and relatively generous medium-bodied flavors that are almost surprisingly forward, all wrapped in a sappy and really lovely finish. While this is a stylish and utterly delicious wine, note that my drinking window assumes that this will tighten up as it is uncharacteristically open at present."

2002 Drouhin Charmes-Chambertin 1.5L

Burghound: "A very fresh and exceptionally elegant nose combines notes of red and blue pinot fruit as well as undertones of earth, violets and hint of spice that is also picked up on the cool, refined and nicely intense middle weight flavors that offer real depth and punch on the admirably long finish. This is only moderately structured though in this format, it will certainly require some medium-term patience. In short, a lovely effort that is soft enough that it could be enjoyed now, even in magnum format though it will certainly improve for years to come."
