Lauer and the "New Mountain"

Posted by Joe Salamone

Neuenberg, which translates to "new mountain," is one of the greatest parcels in the Ayler Kupp.

Curiously, the name "new mountain" is one of the oldest names for Lauer's Grand Cru playground: the Ayler Kupp.

The Neuenberg is also one of the most curious parcels, centered as it were between the cooling, west, forest-side of the Kupp and the warmer, east, river-facing side of the Kupp.

It is a parcel, in other words, that has everything - fashioning a Riesling with washing layers of detail, yet also energy and lift - and in the 2024 edition, you taste this complexity in the most focused and precise Neuenberg we have ever tasted.

This is one of Lauer's most insider Rieslings; at $48.95 in the four-pack, it is yet another German wine steal.

The only Neuenberg to come close to this version was the magical 2021 - another product of a rather cool, classical vintage.

Yet the 2024er is bone-dry (only two grams of residual sugar!) and has an awesome finesse - sheened slate, dried herbs, smoke, garden greens, and a glowing citrus core, detailed and salty. This tastes like a "GG" in many ways, yet it is lighter and more delicate.

In fact, it is the focus and laser-like quality of the wine, the ethereal, almost weightless feel of the wine, that is both thrilling and speaks of the Saar in a way that few wines do.

Lauer first bottled Neuenberg separately in 2010, and it has very quickly become one of the top bottlings in the Lauer collection.

While the 2024 Neuenberg is drinking very well now (certainly opening the bottle a few hours before drinking helps), this is a wine that will also unfurl beautifully over the next decade.

But you'll have to grab it now.
