Lauer Grand Cru GG:
The Totality of the Saar

Posted by Joe Salamone

This may be the most complete, seamless, and majestic dry Riesling of the hallowed Saar.

The Kupp is, unquestionably, one of the greatest and most famous sites of the Saar, right there behind Egon Müller's Scharzhofberg.

Yet unlike Müller's Scharzhofberg, which is dedicated almost exclusively to sweet Rieslings, Lauer's Kupp offers more versatility: it is a hallowed site for both off-dry and dry Rieslings.

In 2023, the Kupp has shaped perhaps the most compelling and complete dry wine of the Saar. It is statuesque - it has everything: power, density, thrust, lift, and cut.

Lauer's 2023 Kupp is compact and dense with concentration, there is a textural ripeness, mouthwatering citrus layered with fine green spices pushed forth seamlessly by a polished minerality.

The Kupp, unique among Lauer's GGs, is at its best both lavish and rigorous. It is unquestionably one of the top dry wines of the Saar and one of the most absurd values in German wine.

While GGs of comparable stature and fame sell for $100-$150 and beyond, Lauer's Grand Cru Kupp GG today sells for as low as $52.95 on the three-pack purchase.

Florian Lauer is unquestionably at the pinnacle of his career. If twenty years ago (his first vintage was 2005) the estate was rather unknown outside of the small valley, in the past two decades Florian has brought the estate to worldwide fame.

Lauer was here this past weekend for Rieslingfeier; it felt like something of a triumphant return of one of our favorite winemakers.

Having Lauer in New York and tasting with him reminded us not only how much energy is in these wines - it reminded us how much energy and passion there is out there for these wines.
