Lauer Masterpiece:
2020 Lauer Schonfels Grosses Gewächs

Posted by Joe Salamone

This 2020 Schonfels GG is one of Florian Lauer's masterpieces.

It's not an accident that Florian Lauer sent magnums of 2020 Schonfels Grosses Gewächs to the Trier auction, the first time that he's ever sent a GG to the auction.

For years, the chiseled and ruthless Schonfels was for me the pinnacle of what Lauer and the Saar could achieve with dry Riesling. With the 2020, the wine reaches another level.

The magic of this wine is its ability to somehow be so complete and so layered while also being incredibly delicate and steely. This is a GG that not only has the depth, weight, and complexity of a "Grand Cru" wine, but it has an incredible fine-ness, polish, elegance, and finesse.

The Saar has an incredible ability to deliver intensity without weight. The 2020 manages the extraordinary feat of having something reminiscent of a Kabinett's featherweight and nervous energy with a depth and intensity that is unquestionably Grand Cru.

Before closing, I should mention quantities are extremely limited. We're only sending this to a small group of Lauer supporters, but we're still expecting a rapid sell-out. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2020er Schonfels No. 11 GG, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, comes from this steep south-east facing hill overseeing the Saar. It offers a magnificently fresh and elegant nose of white flowers, bergamot, minty herbs, grapefruit zest, lime, rosemary, and white peach. The wine delivers plenty of fresh flavors of mint and spices on the superbly focused palate. The finish has some crisp and chiseled citrusy fruits, and, above all, plenty of salty elements. The wine proves incredibly persistent and gorgeously intense, without any disturbing feel of power. It proves a stunningly complex dry Riesling in the making!"
