Lauer Schonfels:
The Intensity of the Saar, Ungrafted...

Posted by Joe Salamone

Schonfels is ruthlessly mineral.

While the Kupp is Lauer's most important vineyard, his headlining star, the Schonfels, is his most extreme site.

The Schonfels is a tiny vineyard, balancing precariously on the edge of a 100-meter cliff down to the river. With ungrafted vines up to and over 100 years old, this is one of the Saar's densest, most extremely mineral wines.

The site, perched up high, is blasted by cool winds coming down the river valley. The structure of the wine, every year, is formidable.

In 2023 the wine is a masterpiece, powerful and layered, sleek and forceful with tremendous rigor.

At only $53.95 in the 4-pack, this is one of the top buys in mineral white wine.

If you are opening this wine in the next six months, open it the day before you intend to drink it - or cellar for 5-10+. There is so much concentration to the wine, so much tension.

As we wrote before, Florian Lauer is unquestionably at the pinnacle of his career. If twenty years ago (his first vintage was 2005) the estate was rather unknown outside of the small valley, in the past two decades Florian has brought the estate to worldwide fame.

Schonfels is one of his most collected treasures. If you are interested, do not delay.
