Life, Death, Transition:
2022 Vollenweider

Posted by Joe Salamone

"If the triumphs of the past few vintages represent Moritz’s successes, they also reflect Daniel Vollenweider's wisdom."

In July of 2022, the great Daniel Vollenweider passed away.

Less than two months later, still dealing with the trauma of his friend and business partner's passing, the young Moritz Hoffmann began his first solo harvest.

The entire collection is nothing less than a triumph.

Mosel Fine Wines has written: "The remarkable 2022 collection makes us believe that the incredibly talented Moritz Hoffmann will be reaching exciting new heights in the years to come!"

Both wines on offer today (complete notes below) are monuments to Kabinett, yet they are also a final monument to the great Daniel Vollenweider. For so many reasons, these wines should be in everyone's cellar: They simultaneously mark an ending and a new beginning.

More than one taster has noticed a certain new fire at Vollenweider. Since 2019 the wines have gotten sharper and racier.

The complex truth is also that Mortiz Hoffmann, Vollenweider's partner at the estate, has been largely in charge of the vineyard work and winemaking since 2019. Daniel, battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, often did not have the strength for the vineyard work. He did not want to be in the cellar.

While Moritz was able to shape the wines more and more in these final vintages, this was done with Daniel's blessing and approval. Daniel knew that for the estate to continue, Moritz would need the freedom to follow his style, to make his own decisions.

Vollenweider's importer vom Boden (also quoted at the beginning) sums up the triumph of these final vintages. "Daniel had unwavering confidence in Moritz. Moritz, for his part, had unwavering confidence in Daniel’s judgment. This confidence, internalized, is without question one of the final gifts Daniel gave Moritz. With these new Vollenweider wines, you can taste it… this gift."

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2022er Trarbach Burgberg Riesling Kabinett was made from early harvested fruit around 83° Oechsle and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a quite backward and softly earthy nose made of pear, earthy spices, and whipped cream. The wine proves superbly playful and elegant on the palate, where a touch of Spätlese creaminess is beautifully wrapped into ripe zest and citrusy elements. This debut vintage is a winner!"
