Trévallon is a one of the great domaines of southern France.
We buy old bottles whenever we can. Last year, we opened a thrilling bottle of 2010 Trévallon. Over the years, we've drank bottles with thirty years of age that have been profoundly captivating. In short, this is a wine that has an impressive architecture and can age gracefully.
Today, we're happy to offer the 2021, a vintage that shares a lot of the finesse and clarity that made the 2010 so exciting.
Trévallon sits on hard limestone. Dynamite was required to plant some of the vineyards. Like at Château Simone, the vineyards face north, which limits the ripeness and gives the wine a beautiful elegance and minerality.
Very traditional methods are followed: the wine is destemmed, fermented in open-top tonneaux, and then aged almost exclusively in foudre. Based on old text, Trévallon believes that Cabernet Sauvignon was very important to their area, and along with Syrah, it makes up 50% of the blend. Since the appellation guidelines for Les Baux de Provence restricted the percentage of Cabernet to 20% in the nineties, Trévallon hasn't been able to list the appellation on their label.
Trévallon flaunts the nobility that France's south can display. The 2021 dramatizes the fineness, elegance, and harmony that Trévallon can achieve. There's plenty of class and it's nuanced to the point of being haunting in its complexity.
It's always nice to be able to offer a wine with such a track record for aging and in such an impressive vintage. The 2021 is among our favorites of the past decade.
