Loire Elite - 50 Cases Produced
2016 Roches Neuves Saumur Blanc Clos Romans

Posted by Joe Salamone

Clos Romans is a walled vineyard dating back to the 11th century.

The wine stands as one of the great expressions of Chenin.

There's no doubt that Roches Neuves is at the top of their game. The domaine is one of the greats of the Loire. A few years ago, Revue du Vin de France awarded Roches Neuves a 3-star rating and cemented its elite status. The only other 3-star domaine in the Loire is Clos Rougeard.

Along with the Memoires Rouge, the Clos Romans Blanc represents the top of the range. Clos Romans is a site with a thin layer of sandy clay and solid limestone bedrock underneath. What results is a wine of dramatic grandeur and elegance.

Roches Neuves' Thierry Germain purchased the Clos in 2007 and released the first vintage in 2010. With each passing vintage we've watched the wine grow more refined, more chiseled and even more multifaceted.

In any vintage, Clos Romans possesses a stately presence with a pristine, driving core of acidity. The 2016 is especially commanding, delivering a saturating wash of cool-toned yellow fruits, minerals, spice and flamboyant floral high-notes. For all its intensity, the wine is animated by an incredible lift and polished stony core.

Clos Romans is one of the great wines of the Loire. Sadly, the tiny production is quickly snapped up by Michelin 3-Star restaurants in Europe. We always wish we had more to offer, but feel grateful for any bottles that we can get our hands on.
