I've always had a soft spot for Culs de Beaujeu.
The way that it comes off as saturating, poised and vividly stony is supremely compelling.
Compared to Monts Damnes and Grande Cote, Culs de Beaujeu works on a more compact scale and has a more tightly coiled framework.
Culs de Beaujeu is Cotat's coolest site and home to his oldest vines. Cellar door pricing for Culs de Beaujeu is higher than Monts Damnés and Grande Côte.
The Culs de Beaujeu is a very steep vineyard in the area of Chavignol, which is considered Sancerre's best village. Chavignol sits on Kimmeridgian marl, the same soil as parts of Chablis.
What results is a tensile wine with a talc-like grip and layered notes of citrus, stones fruits, and exotic flourishes. The 2019 is packed with Kimmeridgian minerality with a punchy length and serious rigor.
Along with Vatan and his cousin Pascal, François Cotat's Sancerres exist on their own plane. These are the time-tested benchmarks of Sancerre, collected by the same people who chase down the best wines in the world.
