Loire Rarity: 2014 Pascal Cotat Sancerre Rosé

Posted by Joe Salamone

Pascal Cotat's rosé is something that we're always searching for.

Many of you reading this will immediately understand why. It's one of the best and most ageworthy rosés on the planet.

It's also painfully rare. A typical allocation to top accounts is a case or two.

2014 is a stellar vintage for the entire Loire, but this is especially true in Sancerre. The wines have such impact, length and balance. Pascal's 2014 Rosé has all the markers of being able to compete with the best recent vintages. We recently had a really impressive bottle of Pascal's 2002 Rosé and it's very likely that the 2014 will show similarly a decade down the road.

With age, it's the terroir that comes to dominate the rosé with singular minerality. There may be a silky texture and gentle floral notes, but it's the stony minerality that defines old Cotat rosé.

When it comes to Sancerre, Cotat's village of Chavignol is a very special place. Chavignol is absolutely defined by its terroir - Kimmeridgian marl, the same soil as parts of Chablis - that imbues the wine with Chablis-like minerality.

This is the first time that we've ever been able to offer Pascal's Rosé. He's the undeniable master of this category. I expect this will sell out really quickly and need to be allocated.
