Loire Royalty
2013 Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg

Posted by Ian McFadden

In the Loire, the wines of Clos Rougeard are without peer when it comes to refinement and ageability.

Simply put, Clos Rougeard is Loire royalty.

Le Bourg is Rougeard's top red bottling. It's aging capacity is legendary, rivaling First-Growth Bordeaux. Their holdings in Bourg are a mere 1ha and the vines are around 75-95 years old. The soil is clay over hard limestone.

This all adds up to the most aristocratic wine in the Loire Valley showing incredible depth and precision. The 2013 Bourg is a classic vintage with vibrant acidity and a very savory profile. For purists, it's a gorgeous vintage. The 2013 has haunting notes of sandalwood, kelp and truffles along with brighter elements, like red fruits, violets and spice.

In the past five or so years, Rougeard has really blown up and finding the wines in quantity has become extremely difficult. The quantities available are very modest and even though this offer is only going to a very small list, I expect the wines to sell out quickly. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
