For Huët's founder, Gaston Huët, Clos du Bourg was Vouvray's greatest vineyard.
Today, we pay tribute to this vineyard, the stoniest of Huët's sites, that yields wines of the grandest architecture.
It is always humbling to write about Huët's wines. They are one of the great estates of France with nearly a century of history turning out mesmerizing and long-lived Chenin Blanc. At this point, there's not much left to be said about Huët and their Clos du Bourg.
The 2016 and 2017 vintages of Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec offer a great illustration of the different guises that Clos du Bourg can wear. In short, you have an expression of Bourg that's overtly stony and cut and another that's layered and miraculously lifted. In both vintages, you get an outrageous amount of finesse.
The 2016 Demi-Sec is a wine that drives Bourg's chalky minerality home. The wine is electric, penetrating and multifaceted. The ultra-fine presentation is infused with bright citrus and round stone fruits. In short, it's simply thrilling.
In 2017, Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec has an amazing purity and a high-toned floral profile. It assumes a great depth and presence while remaining bright and lifted.
It's always fun to offer Huët's Bourg Demi-Sec. With so many young producers working incredibly hard, it's easy to forget how exciting Huët's wines can be, not to mention how much value they offer. I hope this serves as a reminder of how stunning Bourg Demi-Sec is.
