Out of Roches Neuves' impressive lineup, Franc de Pied is one of our favorites.
Roches Neuves produces some of the top wines of the Loire. Still, there's something special about the Franc de Pied.
The Franc de Pied works on an entirely different wavelength. There's an utterly unique textural dimension, length, and precision. It possesses an unusual combination of delicacy and at the same time intensity.
The wine is based on vines that have never been grafted onto American rootstock as nearly all of Europe's vines have been to escape phylloxera. Germain planted Franc de Pied Cabernet Franc vines at high density in sandy soils in 2004. Since its first release in 2008, it's been his most fascinating wine.
The Franc de Pied has such a tightly wound and subtly nuanced profile that it can come off as endlessly complex. The 2019 has a gorgeous combination of power and silken refinement. There's an incredible amount of depth with freshness and detail.
This is one of the most intriguing wines of the Loire. It's a wine that we buy every chance that we have. Sadly, the quantities available are always modest. Our advice is to snap up the 2019 right away.
