Long-Haul Beaujolais:
2023 Roilette Fleurie Cuvée Tardive

Posted by Joe Salamone

Roilette's wines are built to age. Few Beaujolais can match their evolution in the cellar.

By now, most of you know the story: Alain Coudert set out to make the anti-nouveau, a bottle to showcase Beaujolais' aging potential. He definitely proved his point—Tardives with 10 or 15 years of age can be shockingly good.

The 2023 is an intense vintage of the Tardive showing its classic profile. There's meatiness, dark fruits (black cherries, mulberries, plums), olives, licorice, smoke, mint, and an array of floral notes. The architecture and layered complexity are really impressive.

Tardive has a tendency to shine in riper vintages. In 2023, the wine packs an enormous amount of complexity with a beautiful driving acidity.

Roilette's Tardive is sourced from two parcels of eighty-year-old vines perched on the border of Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent, which produce Beaujolais' deepest, most complex, and most ageworthy wines. While the division between Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent begins at the tree line, the soils are exactly the same.

Tardive delivers more than its fair share of complexity. With some bottle age, it really starts to shine through. Everything points to a profound Tardive that will evolve for the next decade-plus.
