2009 Chezeaux(Ponsot)
One of Burgundy's (Big) Little Secrets

This is just a great deal. The offer came across my desk yesterday and I immediately pulled the trigger and got to writing.

Chezeaux's Griotte has been one of our most popular offerings for the past four or five years. It's just one of those incredible values, known only to a select few.

Today, I'm happy to offer Chezeaux's 09 Griotte for as low as $169.95 - the lowest price by a wide margin.

What makes Chezeaux's Griotte so special? When you look closely at the label, you come across "this wine is produced, aged and bottled at Domaine Ponsot."

Ponsot is one of the most elite producers in Burgundy. The style is unmistakable: Deep, textured, so powerfully dark-fruited and yet, incredibly vivid and elegant. There is a signature at Ponsot that sets them apart from everything in the Cote d'Or.

The pricing, too, separates Ponsot from a lot of other estates, even in Burgundy. Ponsot's 09 Griotte is currently going for $329-$500.

Thankfully, because of the French practice of "métayage" - an arrangement where a wine is made in exchange for a percentage of the final product, Ponsot's Griotte can be had at a much more affordable price.

The basic story is that Ponsot makes the wine from Chezeaux's land, and in return he gets two-thirds of the production, which he bottles under his own label. The remaining third - the same wine - is bottled under the Chézeaux label, which we have for you today.

Ponsot's Griotte is one of our favorite bottlings. If their legendary Clos de la Roche is deep and muscular, Griotte haunts us with its perfumes and with its fineness. There's a satiny, beautiful elegance to Ponsot's Griotte that's heartbreaking.

Ponsot produced killer 2009s. Their Griotte is especially stunning in 2009. The ripeness of the vintage seems to have given the wine an extra level of complexity and endowed the wine with even more textural depth. At the same time, Griotte's cherry fruit remains drenched in minerals.

Griotte-Chambertin is the smallest Grand Cru in Gevrey at only 3 hectares in size. There's never a lot of Griotte to go around.

This is a single small parcel. It's unlikely we'll ever see pricing this sharp again. Our advice is to jump on this.

Burghound: "This is notably fresher than the Chapelle with a strikingly elegant and highly complex nose that displays perfumed and notably ripe red currant and cassis aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and spice hints. There is good intensity and detail to the opulently textured medium weight plus flavors that are blessed with a seemingly endless reserve of sap on the gorgeously long finish. This is a really impressive effort and if the palate complexity can eventually match that of the nose, this should be able to achieve, or perhaps even exceed, the upper end of my predicted range."
