Lowest Price on Perennial Over-Achiever
2007 Drouhin Beaune
1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge
Clos des Mouches is a special vineyard.
Clos des Mouches has a cult following. I've been at many dinners where bottles of Clos des Mouches had no trouble going head-to-head with Grand Crus. To be able to offer the 2007 at what amounts to Villages pricing is really exciting.
The 2007 Burgundies have been in bottle long enough to give a strong impression of what the vintage has to offer. For me, it's an absolutely lovely vintage. Sure, it's not the vintage of the century, but that's part of what I love about the 2007s. Instead of having to wait the 10-15 years that many great vintages take to show, the 2007s showed brilliantly out of the gate and have never shut down.
Stephen Tanzer captures the charm of the vintage quite well when he writes, "They finish with an almost electric impression of lift and perfume, as if their fine tannins were sparkling on the palate like diamond dust."
The delicate, transparent style of Drouhin provided the perfect platform for the 2007 vintage, especially the Clos des Mouches.
Clos des Mouches is simply one of the gems in the Drouhin stable. It is, in fact, one of the first sites that Joseph Drouhin bought in the 1920s. The site itself is situated in a choice mid-slope location smack against Beaune's border with Pommard. The old vines claw into hard limestone.
If Beaune is known for being somewhat sturdy and rustic, Clos des Mouches is something of an anomaly. The wine is strikingly elegant, suave and silky in texture. It is a wine that brings the force and heft of Beaune, yet does so with incredible composure and always an incredible snap of limestone and mineral.
Given the price creep that Burgundy has been experiencing over the past few vintages, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this deal. The 2007 is a beautiful expression of Clos des Mouches and simply a wine that overachieves greatly for the price tag.
