For an estate known for wines of extreme cut and incisiveness, this late-release Kabinett Trocken is perhaps the most elegant dry wine of their entire 2022 collection.

The extra year in tank, on the full lees, has given the wine an unreal mouthfeel, a satiny, gossamer fine-ness; it has made the wine feel as if the crackling electrical energy that ripples through it has somehow been polished to a sheen.

This is everything that you could want in a Mosel dry. Yet keep in mind this is a Ludes Riesling, with all the lightning bolts that implies. Few wines, even in Germany, achieve the airy, explosive, forceful kinetics of a great Kabinett Trocken, a mineral-water essentialness with minute shockwaves of green citrus, herbs, mint, and slate.

The 2022 "Speyer" Kabinett Trocken has just arrived stateside; at $26.95 on the four-pack, this has to be one of the year's greatest values in crystalline, cellar-worthy dry white wines.

The "Speyer" parcel is a cherry section of Ludes' famed vineyard site, the Thörnicher Ritsch. Long considered one of the most formidable sites of the Mosel, shaping wines with a Saar-like cut of acidity, Ludes has finally brought this site to the mainstream.
