Magic in Meursault:
2018 Ballot-Millot Meursault

Posted by Ian McFadden

The 2018 cemented Ballot-Millot's status as a top Burgundy talent.

We loved their 2014s and 2017s. However, in 2018, they made clear that they can excel outside of top vintages.

On the multiple occasions that we've tasted their 2018s, we've been shocked by the wines' energy and detail.

Similar to their 2017s, the quality is shocking at the villages level, Their Perrières and other Meursault 1er Crus are great, but in our tastings, the Meursault has been the star.

At as low as $56.95, this is a very serious white Burgundy for the money.

The 2018 Meursault is all about texture. There's a really appealing marriage of richness and tensile minerality. Stylistically, Ballot-Millot falls between the reductive style of Coche and Roulot and the voluptuous, oily style of old-school Meursault producers. Ballot’s wines have undeniable energy and detail, without sacrificing richness.

Ballot Millot’s roots in Burgundy are seriously deep: they began amassing vineyards back in the 17th century. The domaine has been one to watch ever since Charles Ballot took over in 2001. When Ballot took over, he began reducing yields, improving farming practices, and updating equipment. The level of quality rose dramatically.

The 2018 Meursault shows the domaine in top form. The equilibrium that the wine hits is thrilling. I've created special 4-pack pricing to encourage deep buys. Meursault values like this rarely come along.

Burghound: "A top note of hazelnut is present on the smoky aromas of acacia blossom, honeysuckle and pear. The textured, firm and tension-filled medium weight flavors possess a lovely texture on the very dry, refreshing and youthfully austere finale. This could use a bit more overall depth, but my rating assumes that will gradually develop."
