Magical Chambolle
2011 Roumier Chambolle-Musigny
Lowest Price in the Nation
If anyone can make us emerge from the depths of the holidays, it's Roumier.
Because for me, and for most other Burgundy extremists, Roumier is pretty much as good as it gets.
This is no secret. It's remarkable we are even making this offer at all; Roumier's very limited wines are snatched up by rabid Burgundy buyers before they even hit shelves making it nearly impossible to find wines in any quantity.
Just to pause for a moment to highlight the rarity, there's just one other listing of Roumier's 2011 Chambolle and only four listings for any 2011 Roumier.
This is no ordinary villages-level wine. In the realm of villages gems, this wine sits up there with Mugnier's Chambolle, Rousseau's Gevrey-Chambertin, and Mugneret-Gibourg's Vosne-Romanée; but given its pedigree and incredible aging potential, I have no qualms in saying that Roumier's Chambolle surpasses them all as the greatest villages-level wine in all of Burgundy.
Bobby's chiming in as I write this — without a doubt.
Roumier's Chambolle is one of the rare villages wines that blue chip collectors clamor for. I once witnessed a buyer at auction put down $1,200 for a bottle of the 1971. And that was five years ago now.
And in 2011, Roumier absolutely killed it. The wines coming out of his domaine were far and away some of the best of the vintage: astoundingly transparent, with complexity, precision, éclat.
The Chambolle-Musigny is a glorious expression of what Roumier was able to achieve in 2011. It has a vibrant energy, with an undeniable amount of poise and class. And as that big-ticket '71 bottle can attest, this wine has incredible aging potential. The 1999 is still very much fresh and vibrant.
But since it is the day after Christmas, I won't keep you much longer. As Clive Coates put it, "In sum, this is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines and Christophe Roumier is one of its most intelligent and knowledgeable wine-makers. The combination of the two produces magic."
Even sending this out on one of the sleepiest days of the year, I don't expect this to last.
