There's nothing like Ponsot in the entire Côte d'Or. And his Clos de la Roche is one of the great wines of the world.
It's the magnum opus of one of Burgundy's most original and iconoclastic producers.
Clos de la Roche is one of the most individual Burgundies you'll ever taste, and one of the best. Not to mention one of the longest lived - it's a long-distance runner that can age gloriously for 30 years or more, especially in magnum.
Ponsot's Clos de la Roche is incredibly compelling. It's a wine of majesty and unabashed animal power, but still beautifully refined. There's a deeply textured intensity with powerful dark fruit.
The 2014 is an amazingly transparent and firmly built edition of the wine. Burghound calls attention to its "almost painful intensity before culminating in an explosively long and very firmly structured finish." That sums it up well. This is a jaw-dropping vintage.

2014 Ponsot Clos de la Roche
Burghound: "There is enough wood to notice along with a hint of menthol on the markedly earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas where background hints of spice and floral elements are in evidence. The overtly powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors display almost painful intensity before culminating in an explosively long and very firmly structured finish where once again a hint of bitter cherry appears. This is an interesting wine of contrasts as the mid-palate, even with all of its intensity, possesses a caressing palate feel yet the finish is bold, robust and unyielding. As the description confirms, this is going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar."
