de Montille MAGNUMS
1993 Hubert de Montille Volnay 1er Mitans 1.5L
"Edgy, elegant and fine." - Burghound
There's not a lot more to say: great Volnay vintage, classic producer, awesome format, drinking gorgeously now.
And so we won’t say a lot more. Well, other than mentioning that they’re a STEAL today: $329.95 a magnum - the only price on mags in the country… not to mention, the only other price on any format in the country is $225 a bottle.
The de Montille wines are well-known (and respected) for taking longer to come around, and nearly two decades in, the 1993s have officially arrived. If this vintage was misunderstood in its youth, it’s now proven to be one of the top vintages of its decade - only 1999 really overshadows it. And 1993 was particularly solid in Volnay, the year and the commune both reflecting back each others’ fine elegance and pretty mineral detail. “Edgy, elegant and fine,” just as the Burghound reflects in his tasting note.
Etienne de Montille had three vintages as head winemaker under his belt when he made the 93s, and his mastery of combining his father Hubert’s more solid-structured, occasionally austere style with a slightly silkier texture, a touch more overall finesse is beautifully on display here.
All this is only showing more impressively out of magnum - time having been effectively slowed down in this larger format. These show such a beautiful integration of fruit and earth, of tannin and acidity, everything in its right place right now. They are perfect for a bigger gathering as we move into this autumn or winter, yet they also certainly have an easy five years left in them, and quite probably more with proper cellaring.
As you may have figured, we’ve got just a handful of these to go around. This offer goes out only to those of you who have bought large-format Burgundy from us in the past. Please let us know how many you’d ideally take, and we’ll make allocations as best we can.
