Tête de Cuvée Mags - Sub-$300
1996 Dom Ruinart 1.5L
Make Room in the Cellar

This is, very simply, incredible Blanc de Blancs from one of the most collectible producers, vintages, and formats in the world.

As you've no doubt heard (again and again), 1996 was one of those rare years in Champagne that brought even the best to new heights.

Like 2005 in Burgundy, this was simply a vintage with everything: Deep, off-the-charts concentration matched to just massive structures and enlivening acidity. This is a vintage people will talk about, for a long time.

With the wines beginning to dry up in the marketplace, today we offer a small parcel of MAGNUMS from one of the top Champagne houses at a price point that feels more "750ml" than "1.5L": The 1996 Dom Ruinart at $299.95 a magnum.

These are rare bottles with only a slight upcharge for the format. Consider that the only other U.S. retailer with any 1996 magnums is selling them at $450. So feel free to think of today's offer as $150 off a top Champagne, from a top vintage, in a top format.

Not bad.

Steadily gaining an impassioned following in the States, Dom Ruinart has long been regarded in Europe as a wine that stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Dom Pérignon, Krug and Salon, to name but a few giants.

As we wrote about in our email on the 1996 Dom Ruinart fifths, this really is one of the most graceful expressions of the Chardonnay grape… at least north of Montrachet.

Sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, the Dom Ruinart is made only in the best vintages, and 1996 certainly was one of the best – ever.

Perhaps not since 1988 has a vintage of such impressive mineral tension and grand muscular stature come along. Dom Ruinart got everything right in 1996 with its Blanc de Blancs, a wine of intense, chalky minerality with a powerful core of acidity all softly wrapped in layers upon layers of fruit and just a touch of luscious creaminess. The 1996 is a young legend-in-the-making, a wine that will make old bones and stand squarely alongside (if not above) the 1988, 79, 66.

In addition to this being one of most collectible Champagnes due to its name and birth year, something extra should be said about the magnum format of today’s offering. While we love outstanding Champagne from any size bottle, out of magnum it just somehow always impresses us more. This is truly the most collectible, most age-worthy format.

This is a very limited bottling - we have but a few six-packs, so all of today’s orders are subject to confirmation. Please email us atoffers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463 with your maximum request.
