Meursault Secret - Vines Planted in 1918:
2017 Fichet Meursault Les Gruyaches

Posted by Ian McFadden

Burgundy is full of quirky overachieving wines that cruise under-the-radar. Fichet's Gruyaches is one of them.

It comes from vines planted in 1918 that are just below the 1er Cru Charmes.

Gruyaches takes the expectations of the villages designation and turns them on its head. It punches way above its weight class.  In the 2017 vintage, the wine is astoundingly good.

The 2017 vintage produced wines of purity, balance, and joy. This is a perfect complement to Fichet’s transparent approach to winemaking, and Gruyaches is a powerful example of Fichet's success.

Fichet's 2017 Gruyaches is incredibly pure, packed with complexity, and offers plenty of detailed refinement. It has dazzling citrus-infused energy, driving minerality, and a silky, harmonious texture.

Fichet started working in Meursault back in 1981, thanks to his father’s sharecropping agreements. By 1984, he had produced his first wine. Sadly, Fichet was forced to start over from scratch in 1991 when the contracts ended, but today Fichet works with an impressive collection of vineyards thanks to renegotiated long-term contracts. Few winemakers are as dedicated to the health of their vineyards as Fichet and it comes across in each of the wines he produces.

If I had to single out a producer of white Burgundy that deserves much more attention, Fichet would be the first one to come to mind. Gruyaches would be one of the first wines that I would reach for to show how exciting the domaine is. The 2017 is not be missed.

Burghound: "Here there is no reductive funk with its cool, pure and airy nose that reflects the essence of pear, acacia blossom, hazelnut and citrus peel. The vibrant medium weight flavors possess a notably more refined mouth feel while exhibiting a subtle minerality that carries over to the refreshing and impressively complex finale. This is a lovely Meursault villages that should amply reward mid-term keeping."
