Schönleber's "Mineral" is a serious wine. This is a bottle that will embarrass many Grand Cru dry Rieslings. Like "von der Fels," "Mineral" has layers of shimmering fruit yet a rapier-like delivery of mineral, as well as a quality that makes the wine feel like it's levitating.
If the 2022 "Mineral" was feather-weight, the 2023 edition has the same incisive, saline-mineral quality. With that said, it has more depth to it as well. There's more cut and more might.
In this effusive vintage, Schönleber captures the expansive, juicy quality of the vintage without any of the weight. It's just a magical effect.
Emrich-Schönleber has long been celebrated as one of the greatest estates in Germany. In the cooler parts of the upper Nahe, they are for us, one of the three unrivaled masters of dry Riesling, along with Keller and Schäfer-Fröhlich.
Schönleber's wines have never been terribly easy to find in the U.S., though their reputation is growing, and you see the wines more often than you did five years ago.
This is a good thing... until the reputation continues to grow and this wine becomes, like "von der Fels," a rarity. Savor the moment - go big!
