Morgon's Master
2012 Foillard Morgon Côte du Py
Foillard is one of the greatest producers in Beaujolais, without question.
There's very little to be said about Jean Foillard, perhaps the most renowned member of Kermit Lynch's spirited Gang of Four in Morgon, that hasn't been said already. We'll keep this short.
Foillard's Côte du Py is one of the wines that I love to have around. It's nimble, food friendly, finessed and with a sense of unmediated purity.
Foillard is a master of Morgon and for me, it's unthinkable not to clear some cellar space each vintage. They are lovely, inspiring wines.
The most common experience with Foillard is that you buy some and realize six months later that the bottles are just singing. It's almost inevitable that you kick yourself for not buying more.
There's no point mincing words: 2012 in Beaujolais was no walk in the park. The line between failure and success is clearly drawn. It's probably no surprise that Foillard is squarely in the latter category. Foillard's 2012s are some of our absolute favorites of the vintage.
We really love Foillard in cooler vintages ('07, '10 and now '12.) His 2012s show the vividness, delineation and straight-up joyful drinking that the best of the vintage offers.
Foillard's 2012 Côte du Py possesses the suave textural element that makes his wines so delicious and its backed by a vibrant wash of minerals, flowers and spice.
There was a time when retailers could order up whatever amount they wanted of Foillard. Those days are long gone. Now, it's allocated. Every year, we work hard to secure enough wine for an offer. Sadly, this year we're looking at less than last year. So it goes, but be warned that we'll likely have to allocate.
